DR JOHANN LOCHNER
Dr Johann Lochner is a Specialist in Oral Medicine and Periodontics based in Somerset West, South Africa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BChD) from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996, where he received the top awards in Oral Medicine & Periodontology and Crown & Bridgework. Following eight years in private practice in the United Kingdom, he obtained the Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (MFGDP UK) and the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MFDS RCS Eng). He later completed his specialist training in Oral Medicine and Periodontics, graduating with an MChD after the merger of the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape dental faculties.
Throughout his career, Dr Lochner has combined specialist clinical practice with teaching and professional leadership. He has served as President of the South African Society for Periodontology, Implantology and Oral Medicine (SASPIO), remains actively involved with the society, and is a Fellow and President of the Southern Africa Section of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). Since 2019, he has also served as a consultant in the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of the Western Cape, where he contributes to the training of specialist registrars in Periodontics, Implantology and Oral Medicine.
In this SASPIO Professional Webinar, “Management of Periodontitis in Private Practice (Part 1),” Dr Lochner shared practical, evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis and management of periodontal disease in the general practice environment. The webinar focused on recognising periodontal disease, developing predictable treatment plans, implementing effective non-surgical periodontal therapy and establishing long-term maintenance protocols to improve patient outcomes. Drawing on decades of specialist clinical experience, he provided delegates with practical guidance for managing periodontitis confidently in everyday dental practice.
